Weipa - Karumba … 2 and 1/2 long days of driving!
★=Full Star☆=Half a Star
·On the first morning we started driving we stopped on the Coen River for breakfast and a swim at about 10.00am, then after a bit of driving we stopped at the Musgrave Roadhouse for lunch.
·On the first night we stopped at a gorgeous gravel pit (it had two big holes filled with water). Later that night we walked around with a headtorch and found lots of frogs. The morning afterwards we had breakfast at camp, then we hit the road again.
·On the second day we were bummed when we saw our first river crossing of the drive...it was super sandy and long, because of that Dad decided it was way too risky to tow the caravan through. We ended up taking an over 200km detour! That night we camped just up from a river crossing.
We had a delicious dinner of beer battered fish, it was yum! I had lots of fun experimenting with my camera...these are some of the photos I took.👇

There was a crossing that was so soft, long and sandy that it would have been very risky to cross with the caravan so instead we went on a 200 km detour to a safer crossing.

Normanton (at least close to it)
★=Full Star☆=Half a Star
At Normanton we had a terrific time looking at a huge model of a crocodile (about the croc: Back in July 1957 an 8.64 metre long croc, Australia's largest known crocodile, was killed with a single shot on the banks of the Norman River by Krystina Pawlowski, that is why the massive croc is nicknamed Krys the croc). We also enjoyed splashing around at the splash park. We were gobsmacked when the boys came back with the bread they’d got at the supermarket….it was $7.50 and it was just a normal white bread loaf! Afterwards we drove a little bit then pulled off the highway to a beautiful little camp area in the middle of the bush, that is where we camped the night. Later on in the night we got the picnic rug out and looked at the magnificent stars, as there was barely any moon.

Adel's Grove/Lawn Hill National Park, QLD
★=Full Star☆=Half a Star
On the day we arrived, as soon as we set up, we went
swimming in Lawn Hill Creek which was only a short walk from our camp. It was
really cold! Luckily when we got out the sun was warm. Later that afternoon we
walked up to the top of Constance Range to watch the sun set but we got there a
bit too early…..about 2 hours too early!
The next day we had a jam packed day and this is what we did:
First thing in the morning we drove up to the national park
and did an 8km walk. It was stunning, there were so many amazing views.
When we got back from the walk (we were super hot and
sweaty) we got our kayak and blow up paddleboard and brought them down to the
river’s edge. That was were we got the canoe we hired. When we got the kayak,
canoe and paddleboard in the water we started to slowly paddle up the river. It
was surprisingly rough because it was quite windy. When we came back to return
the hired canoe we had been paddling for over 2 hours! It had been beautiful
and we had seen 2 freshwater crocodiles up close.
After we got back to camp (it was around 2pm and we left
camp before 7am) we just relaxed, swam in the swimming hole near camp (we
paddled up the on the SUP and Dad spotted a freshwater crocodile basking on a
log) and I made some vanilla cupcakes for the next morning.
The next day......
‘Look at the sun it is so big and beautiful’. We had climbed
to a ridge at the top of Constance Range to watch the picturesque sunrise. We
had climbed up there super early in the morning (we got up at 5am!). Even
though we had to climb up in the pitch black with head torches, it was well
worth it to see the sunrise. As soon as we got up there we found a spot that
was a bit out of the way of the wind and we ate the cupcakes I’d made the night
before. When the sun had fully risen we could see for miles, we enjoyed the view then we climbed back down
again. When we got down we drove back to camp, packed up and left………..little
did we know that we were headed to disaster!!!
There was some beautiful scenery along the longest walk.☝ The beautiful Lawn Hill Creek (it's a bit bigger than a creek, isn't it)!👇
We found a Bowerbird's nest!
When we went on the long walk (which wasn't actually that long, it was only 8 km) the cliffs looked amazing because the morning sun was hitting them and making them look extraordinarily orange (the photo does NOT do it justice)! The exquisite sunrise from the top of Constance Range!👇
You could see for miles from the top of Constance Range!👇 |
When the sun hit a big pile of rocks they looked amazing! There was heaps of beautiful wildflowers!👇
