Week 23- Saturday 20th- Saturday 27th August

Burketown, QLD

Star Rating:★

★=Full Star☆=Half a Star

It all started when we stopped at Doomadgee (DOOM-adgee because it was really our doom) to get some petrol. When Dad went to hop in the car to get ready to go (Mum, Jackson and I were looking at some of the clothes in the Ringers Western truck- Ringer Western is a clothes brand and the funny thing is that we saw them modeling some of their clothes at Babinda Boulders-see week seventeen) the car didn't start! After a long, worrying half an hour with Mum and Dad making phone calls, the owner of the petrol station came to tow us out of the way because we were blocking the petrol pump. When Dad got in and tried to turn the car on it started! After that happened Dad knew the starter motor was broken so we drove straight to Burketown (we weren't even going to Burketown in the first place) and set up in the caravan park there, we knew it was going to be a long wait because it was Saturday and the mechanic didn't open until Monday! We spent our long three and a half days waiting and waiting and waiting...and being bored. I reckon the thing I enjoyed the most was when we went over to the cracked basketball court (it was in the full sun so we could only go there in the morning and late afternoon otherwise we would melt) and Jackson would roller blade, I would roller skate and we would throw the ball to each other. It was fun until on Monday I was too busy roller skating, looking backwards, waiting and watching for Jackson to throw the ball that I didn't notice one of the huge cracks was right behind me. As I was going so fast I hit the crack and flew up in the air! I landed on my butt and wrist with my full weight. I rolled over on my belly and screamed!😱 It hurt so bad but surprisingly when Dad came over I was able to hold on to him as he slowly pulled me over to a seat about 100 meters away to take my roller skates off but it felt like someone was sticking 1 million needles into my butt from the moment I sat down! The next morning was when my wrists started hurting, it felt like some one was ripping my wrist off when I lifted a book. As soon as we got the car back on Tuesday, at around lunch, we left except when we were about 10 minutes out of town Dad realised the car had no power so we went back to town again!! After the mechanic checked it and realised that it would take a couple of hours to fix, Dad took the van in to the caravan park and mum bandaged my wrist up because it was hurting so much. Jackson and I got to watch our iPads in the caravan for a couple of hours because we were all SICK OF THIS TOWN!

My wrist bandaged up!πŸ‘†

There was a super cute Green tree frog in the ladies bathrooms! It was down the drain at first and then it climbed up into a pot plant!

The Burketown bore is a whooping 68 degrees Celsius, there was steam going everywhere even though it was a warm day!

Day one and day two of driving from Burketown - Katherine, QLD & NT

★=Full Star☆=Half a Star

This is what we did on the first and second days of driving (the first day wasn't a full day of driving because we only got the car back in the afternoon):

  • As soon as we got the car back we hitched the van on and started driving, we drove until it was dark then we found a gravel pit and we slept there the night.
  • The next morning we stopped at Hells Gate Roadhouse to fill up and we each got something fresh to eat from their shop.
  • We made it to the Northern Territory and took photos with the sign-Jackson even wrote 4straykatz on it in permanent marker!
  • That night we stopped beside a gorgeous little stream, we swam, played with the cast net and stretched our weary legs there.
That is all we did, but I think it is more exiting than Burketown- don't you?

We stopped at Hells Gate Roadhouse and Jackson and I had a delicious sausage roll each. There was also a cool old truck (see above).
We made it to the Northern Territory!!!!!!!

I practiced the cast net with Jackson, but we didn't catch anything.

Our camp spot was beautiful.

We went up to a old house on the top of a hill, there was lots of cool old stuff including an old motorbike and....

...an old over turned car!

There was a magnificent red dragonfly that let me get up super close to take its photo!

Day three and day four of driving from Burketown - Katherine

Star Rating:★

★=Full Star☆=Half a Star

  • We made it to Borroloola and bought a bit of food, after that we drove down and parked the caravan right next to the river, that was where we had lunch.
  • After we left Borroloola we drove for a bit when all of a sudden Mum said "stop what your doing and take your sun blinds down" (our sun blinds-I don't actually know what their real name is-block out the sun) as she had found a place called  Caranbirini Lost City on Wiki Camps (Wiki Camps is a non-internet app that she uses to find heaps of places and see what other people think of places as well). When we arrived at the Caranbirini Lost City it was hot and dusty and all we all just wanted to get back into the cool air conditioned car, but Mum convinced us to go and I am glad we did! It was breathtaking, magical and spooky all at the same time!
  • After that we drove to find a camp spot. When we finally found one in was nearly dark and that night the sunset was beautiful.
  • On the way to Katherine we stopped at Bitter Springs, the water was super warm and it was a lovely blue colour...but it didn't taste bitter!
  • That night we camped on the edge of a dirt road close to Katherine, near a army training camp/ military base...we may have even been camped on their land. Mum was paranoid that an army car would come and kick us out!
It was a beautiful walk to get to the Caranbirini Lost City but....there were heaps of flies.

The astonishing rock formations at Caranbirini Lost City!

We found some super colorful bugs at the Caranbirini Lost City, they were beautiful!

There was a great view from our campsite, we could see forever because we were up on a mountain!

We went to the Bitter Springs which is a beautiful hot spring, they were so warm and we had heaps of fun floating from one set of steps to the other.

Can you spot the photo bombing fly, it landed right next to my right eye when Mum was taking a photo!

At our military base camp Jackson and I climbed a rocky mountain and there was a great view up top!
