Week 37- Rottnest Island-cute, curious and quizzical quokkas!❤

At Rottnest Island there were quokkas left, right and centre! Everywhere we looked there were quokkas – those cute, fuzzy, adorably mischievous little mammals. I couldn’t get enough of them and their little babies. When we weren’t going crazy over the quokkas we were swimming, snorkelling and playing in the sand at Rottnest’s amazing beaches. Funny Quokka story: It was dark, and Jackson and I were looking at a quokka that was on a table outside. Jackson had a cap on and when he leaned down to have a closer look at the quokka it put its two front paws on the front of Jacksons cap! Obviously I wanted to have a go, so I put Jackson's cap on and lent down, but this time the quokka was wanting to take it one step further! Instead of just putting its front paws on the cap it fully climbed on my head!!!!!!!It didn't stay there long since I didn't have any food on my head, so it used my arm as some steps and jumped back down to the table!!!

Adorable!!!!!!

THE FULL RECOUNT OF OUR TIME IN ROTTNEST:

On the ferry trip over the water was super calm so we went up to the high viewing area at the top of the boat. The view was incredible. When we got to the island the first thing we did was go up to the bakery to get a loaf of bread. That was where we saw our first quokkas- they were everywhere, even in the bakery! The next thing we did was have lunch then hop on the bus that took us to the hostel where we were staying the night. When we had dumped our stuff in the room, we went down to the beach close by for a snorkel around a shipwreck. It was really cool to see and it was very close to shore (no wonder the ship got wrecked!). When we’d got too cold we went back and got changed then went into the main settlement. That afternoon we had a look at Fay’s Bay, The Basin, Longreach Bay, Pinky Beach and Bathurst Lighthouse. At Pinky’s Beach we stopped for a drink at Pinkies Bar, it was there that we saw the cutest little furless baby quokka in its mum’s pouch! After taking HEAPS of photos of all the quokkas feeding on the grass at the bar, we walked back to the hostel, through the main settlement (Thomson Bay). By the time we got back it was dark and Dad started cooking dinner straight away. Whilst he was cooking the funny story from above happened.

The next morning we had breakfast at the main settlement (with more curious quokkas) then headed off to Fay’s Bay. When we got there I started on a sand castle (inspired by the sand sculptures in Perth), by the time we left I was very pleased with my creation. The next beach we went to was called The Basin. We hopped in to snorkel straight away because the water looked stunning (and we were super hot from the walk to get there). The snorkel was beautiful and I did my very first swim through (a swim through is when you dive under and through a tunnel in a rock ledge, then pop out the other side). It was really fun, but also a bit creepy as you had to hold your breath for a long time. Up next was Pinky Beach where Jackson and I explored the rocks and made another sandcastle. My castle was even better than the one I had made at Fay’s Bay (well I thought so anyway!). After Pinky Beach we walked back to the main settlement as it was time to board the ferry home. On the way we had another couple of cute quokka encounters. We sat down on the ground and some quokkas came up really close to us – a baby quokka even started nibbling on Jackson’s shoelaces (brave quokka getting that close to his feet!).

On the ferry ride back it was much more crowded and the sea was a lot rougher so we didn’t go up to the top deck.

Our time in Rottnest, especially the quokkas, was amazing.

On the ferry.

Thomson Bay(the beach near our accommodation) had some rocks that were fun to climb on, we also enjoyed a walk along the beach!👇

There was some awesome seaweed at The Basin, it looked really cool.
